Adhyaya 2
The Brahmani’s vow and the gift of Mangala
Long ago, in a certain town, there lived a Brahmana and his wife, who were very sorrowful because they had no child. As every time, this time too the Brahmana went into the forest to worship; sitting in the forest he began his puja, and after the puja he began to pray to Hanuman for a son. Meanwhile his wife too, at home, kept the vrat every Tuesday, wishing for a son, and every Tuesday at the end of the vrat she would offer bhoga to Bajarangabali and only then take her food.
One day of the vrat, for some reason, the Brahmani could neither prepare the food nor offer bhoga to Hanuman. That very day the Brahmani vowed that she would take food only after offering bhoga to Hanuman on the coming Tuesday. After passing six days hungry and thirsty, on the Tuesday the Brahmani fell unconscious. Then, seeing her steadfastness, her sacrifice and her true dedication and devotion, Hanuman was pleased. He appeared to the Brahmani and said that he was very pleased with her and granted her the boon of a son. And as that boon, Hanuman gave the Brahmani a son and vanished. The Brahmani was overjoyed at receiving a son, and named the boy Mangala.
Adhyaya 3
La duda del brahmana y el sueño
The Brahmana’s doubt and the dream
Some time later, when the Brahmana came back home, he saw the boy and asked who he was. His wife told him the whole story. But, taking the Brahmani’s words for a deceit, the Brahmana did not believe his wife. One day, when the chance came, the Brahmana threw the boy into a well, and when he returned home the Brahmani asked him, ‘Where is our son Mangala?’ At that very moment Mangala came in smiling from behind, and the Brahmana was startled to see him back. That same night Hanuman appeared to the Brahmana in a dream and told him that it was he who had given the son to the Brahmani. Knowing the truth, the Brahmana was overjoyed, and the Brahmana and his wife began to keep the vrat regularly every Tuesday. Thus Hanuman’s boundless grace remains upon every person who keeps the Tuesday vrat.
