Once Lord Mahadeva, wandering with Parvati, came down to the mortal world, to the city of Amaravati. The king there had built a temple to Shiva, splendid, lovely and calming to the mind, and as they wandered, Shiva and Parvati stopped there. Parvati said, ‘My lord, come, let us play a game of dice here today.’ The game began. Shiva said, ‘I will win,’ and so they talked as they played. Just then the priest came to do the worship. Parvati asked him, ‘Priest, tell us: who will win?’ The priest said, ‘No one is as skilled at this game as Mahadeva, so Mahadeva will win this round.’ But the opposite happened: Parvati won. Because he had spoken falsely, Parvati cursed the priest to become a leper, and he became one. Shiva and Parvati both went away. Some time later, apsaras came to worship at the temple. They asked the priest why he had become a leper, and he told them everything. The apsaras said, ‘Priest, keep the vrat of sixteen Mondays, and Shiva, pleased, will take away your trouble.’ The priest asked them how the vrat is kept, and they told him the whole method, of keeping the vrat and of its udyapana. With faith and in due form the priest began the vrat, and at the end he kept the udyapana too. By the power of the vrat he was healed. Some days later Shankara and Parvati came to that temple again. Seeing the priest well, Parvati asked, ‘What remedy did you find to be released from my curse?’ The priest said, ‘O Mother, my suffering was taken away by keeping the sixteen Mondays, as the apsaras told me.’
