Um trayambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam, urvarukamiva bandhananmrityormukshiya mamritat,,
We worship the three-eyed One, fragrant, who makes all beings flourish; as the ripe cucumber parts from its stalk, may he release us from death, and not from immortality.

The hunter Gurudruha
There are differing views about ‘Mahashivaratri’. Some learned men hold that on this very day Shivaji and Mother Parvati were bound in the thread of marriage, while some other scholars believe that on this very day Shivaji drank the poison named ‘Kalakuta’, which rose out of the ocean at the churning of the sea. It is known that this churning of the ocean was done by the devas and the asuras to obtain amrita. The katha of a hunter is also joined with this festival — how Lord Shiva, pleased by the worship the hunter offered without knowing it, poured his boundless grace upon him. This katha is also gathered in the puranich “Shiva Purana”.
In ancient times, in a certain forest, there lived a hunter named Gurudruha, who hunted wild animals and so supported his family. Once, on the day of Shivaratri, he went out to hunt, but as chance would have it, even after searching the whole day he found no prey. He grew anxious that his children, his wife and his mother and father would have to go hungry. At sunset he went near a lake, and there, by the edge of a ghata, he climbed a tree, taking a little water to drink, for he was sure that some animal or other would come here to quench its thirst. That tree was a bel (bilva) tree, and beneath that very tree was a Shiva linga, which could not be seen because it was covered with dry bel leaves.

The first and second praharas
Poco después otra cierva llegó allí a beber agua.
Before the first prahara of the night had passed, a doe came there to drink water. As soon as he saw her, the hunter set an arrow to his bow. In doing so, the jolt of his hand made some leaves and a few drops of water fall onto the Shiva linga below, and without his knowing it the hunter’s worship of the first prahara was done. When the doe heard the rustle of the leaves, she looked up in alarm and, frightened, said to the hunter in a trembling voice, ‘Do not kill me.’ The hunter said that he and his family were hungry, and so he could not let her go.
The doe promised that she would hand her young over to her lord and come back; then he could hunt her. The hunter could not believe her words. Again she assured him, saying that just as the earth rests on truth alone, the ocean keeps within its bounds and streams of water fall from the springs, so she too was speaking the truth. Cruel though he was, the hunter felt pity for her, and saying ‘Come back quickly’, he let the doe go.
A little later another doe came there to drink water. The hunter grew watchful and began to aim his arrow, and as he did so, the jolt of his hand again, just as before, made a little water and some bel leaves fall onto the Shiva linga below, and so, of itself, the hunter’s worship of the second prahara was done as well. This doe too, frightened, begged the hunter for her life, but when he refused, she gave him her word to come back, saying that she knew that whoever gives his word and goes back on it loses all the merit gathered in his life. As before, the hunter trusted this doe’s word too and let her go.

The third prahara: the stag
Now he was tormented by the worry that hardly any of those does would come back, and what would become of his family now. Just then he saw a stag coming towards the water. Seeing him, the hunter was very glad. Now again, as he set the arrow to his bow, his worship of the third prahara was completed of itself, but the sound of the falling leaves put the stag on his guard. He saw the hunter and asked, “What do you mean to do?” The hunter said, “I will kill you to give food to my family.”
The stag, gladdened, began to say, “I am blessed that this body of mine will be of use to someone; by doing good to another my life will be fulfilled. But please let me go now, so that I may hand my young into their mother’s keeping, comfort them all, and come back here.” The hunter’s heart had by now grown pure, for the heap of his sins had been destroyed, and so he said humbly, “All who came here made fine speeches and went away, and have not yet come back. If you too go away telling lies, what will become of my family?” Then the stag assured him that he spoke the truth, saying that if he did not come back, may he incur the sin that falls on one who, though able, does not do good to another. The hunter let him go too, saying, ‘Come back soon.’
Adhyaya 5
El cuarto prahara: la gracia de Shiva
The fourth prahara: Shiva’s grace
As the last prahara of the night began, the hunter’s joy knew no bounds, for he saw all those stags and does coming together with their young. As soon as he saw them he set an arrow to his bow, and just as before his Shiva-worship of the fourth prahara too was completed. Now, by Shiva’s grace, all the hunter’s sins were burnt to ashes, and so he began to think: ‘Oh, blessed are these animals, who, though without knowledge, wish to do good to others with their own bodies; but shame on my life, that I kept supporting my family by wicked deeds of many kinds.’ Now he held back his arrow, told the deer that they were all blessed, and let them go back. When he did this, Lord Shankara, pleased, at once granted him the darshana of his divine form, gave him the boon of happiness and prosperity, and bestowed on him the name “Guha”. Friends, this is that same Guha with whom Lord Shri Rama made friendship.
Shivaji, who holds Gangaji in his matted locks, who adorns his head with the moon, who bears the tripunda on his brow and the third eye, who is graced with the kalapasha [the king of serpents] at his throat and with the rudraksha mala, in whose hands are the damaru and the trishula, and whom devotees, with great faith, worship and adore by the names Shivashankara, Shankara, Bholenatha, Mahadeva, Lord Ashutosha, Umapati, Gaurishankara, Someshvara, Mahakala, Onkareshvara, Vaidyanatha, Nilakantha, Tripurari, Sadashiva and thousands of other names — may that Lord Shiva, with Shiva, ever make the thoughts of all of us good and bright, and fulfil the wishes of all.
