Karva Cauth is a principal vrat of the Hindu tradition, kept mainly by married women for their husbands’ long life, happiness, prosperity and good health. It is kept on the fourth day of the dark fortnight of Kartika. Karva Cauth has a special importance in North India, where women keep the whole day without water and, in the evening, adorned, perform the worship in due form.
On this day women fast the whole day without food or water, and in the evening break the fast by offering arghya to the moon and looking at their husband’s face. Karva Cauth is not only of religious importance; it is held a sign of love, trust and devotion between husband and wife. The tradition of this vrat also strengthens family bonds and harmony.

The sahukar’s daughter and the false moon
A sahukar had one daughter and seven sons. On Karva Cauth the sahukar’s wife, his daughter and his daughters-in-law kept the vrat. At night, when the sahukar’s sons sat down to eat, they asked their sister to eat too. The sister said, “Brother! The moon has not risen yet. When it rises I will offer arghya and then eat.” At this the brothers went outside the town, lit a fire, and holding up a sieve showed her its light, saying, “Sister! The moon has risen; offer arghya and eat.”
The sister called her brothers’ wives too, so that they could offer arghya to the moon, but they knew their husbands’ trick. They said, “Baiji! The moon has not risen yet. Your brothers are being clever and showing you the light of a fire through a sieve.” But the sister paid no heed to her sisters-in-law; she offered arghya to the light her brothers showed and ate. The vrat being broken in this way, Ganesha was displeased with her. After this her husband fell gravely ill, and all there was in the house went on his illness. When the sahukar’s daughter learned of her fault, she was filled with remorse.
After praying to Ganesha for forgiveness, she began again to keep the Chaturthi vrat in due form. Honouring and welcoming everyone as her faith directed, she set her mind on receiving blessings from all.
Seeing her deeds done with such faith and devotion, Ganesha was pleased with her. He gave her husband back his life, released him from the illness, and then blessed him with wealth and property. So whoever keeps the Chaturthi vrat with faith and devotion, without deceit, will be happy in every way and released from pain and thorns.
