Buddha Purnima
Buddha Purnima
Buddha Purnima
The full-moon tithi of the month of Vaishakha is kept as the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha, and so it is also known as Buddha Purnima. In northern India Lord Buddha is held to be the ninth form of Shri Hari, Lord Vishnu. It is believed that on this day one should worship Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi, bathe in a holy river and give gifts (dana) to a Brahmana; by this, Shri Hari’s blessing stays upon his devotees always. It is said that it was on the occasion of Vaishakha Purnima that Mahatma Buddha, after long ages of hard austerity and wandering in the forest, attained Buddhahood, and gave the whole world the message of truth, peace and service to humanity.
Keep in mind that on this day the vrat is not held to be complete without the sight of the moon. It is believed that on this day Lord Buddha attained knowledge, and that his parinirvana too took place on the full-moon day of the month of Vaishakha. For this reason the day has special importance for Buddhists. What is remarkable is that followers of both the Sanatana dharma and the Buddhist dharma keep it.

Dhaneshvara and the yogi
According to the Puranich kathas, in a city named Kartika there lived a king named Chandrahasha. In that same city lived a Brahmana named Dhaneshvara, whose wife was most gentle and beautiful. There was no lack of wealth or grain in the house, but the sorrow of having no child always troubled them. Once a yogi came to the village. He took alms from all the houses round about, passing over the Brahmana’s house, and went to the bank of the Ganga to eat. Grieved at this slight to his alms, Dhaneshvara went to the yogi and asked him the reason.
The yogi said that alms from a childless house are like the food of the fallen, and whoever eats food from the house of the fallen becomes fallen too. For fear of becoming fallen he would not take alms from that Brahmana’s house. Hearing this, Dhaneshvara was deeply grieved, and he asked the yogi for a way to be blessed with a child. The yogi told him, ‘Worship Mother Chandi.’ Hearing this, he went into the forest to worship Devi Chandi. Pleased by the Brahmana’s austerity, Mother Chandi gave him her darshana and granted him the boon of a son.
