El vrat de Ahoi Ashtami

The vrat of Ahoi Ashtami

Ahoi Ashtami is an important vrat kept by mothers in the Hindu tradition for their children’s long life, happiness, prosperity and good health. It is kept on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Kartika. On this day mothers fast from sunrise until evening and pray for their children’s well-being. The worship and katha of Ahoi Mata hold a special place; a picture of Ahoi Mata is drawn on the wall or on paper and worshipped. In this vrat mothers pray to the Lord for their children’s protection, happiness and prosperity. In the evening, after seeing the stars or the moon, the fast is broken. The vrat is not only a sign of religious faith; it shows the deep love and bond between mother and child. Kept with faith and trust, Ahoi Ashtami is held to bring happiness, peace and well-being to the family.
