The vrat of Ahoi Ashtami
Le vrat d’Ahoi Ashtami
Ahoi Ashtami is an important vrat kept by mothers in the Hindu tradition for their children’s long life, happiness, prosperity and good health. It is kept on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Kartika. On this day mothers fast from sunrise until evening and pray for their children’s well-being. The worship and katha of Ahoi Mata hold a special place; a picture of Ahoi Mata is drawn on the wall or on paper and worshipped.
In this vrat mothers pray to the Lord for their children’s protection, happiness and prosperity. In the evening, after seeing the stars or the moon, the fast is broken. The vrat is not only a sign of religious faith; it shows the deep love and bond between mother and child. Kept with faith and trust, Ahoi Ashtami is held to bring happiness, peace and well-being to the family.

The mother and the cub of the seh
La mère et le petit du seh
According to the Puranich katha, a sahukar lived in a town with his seven sons. Before Divali, the sahukar’s wife went to the pit to fetch clay for plastering the house. As she began digging the clay with a spade, there was a seh’s (porcupine’s) den in that spot. The spade struck a cub of the seh as she dug, and the cub died. Seeing the cub die, the sahukar’s wife was deeply grieved, and she came home full of remorse. A few days later one of her sons died. Then suddenly her second son died too, and within the year her third, her fourth… all seven of her sons died.
Sunk in grief at the loss of her sons, the woman told the women of the neighbourhood that she had never knowingly done any wrong. But once, while digging clay in the pit, she had unknowingly killed a cub of the seh. Since then all seven of her sons had died.
The women around her told the sahukar’s wife, “By telling this, half of your wrong has been destroyed.” And they advised her: “On that same Ashtami, take refuge in Bhagavati Parvati, draw a picture of the seh and her cubs, and worship them. Ask their forgiveness. By the Lord’s grace all your wrongs will be destroyed.” The sahukar’s wife did just that. On the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Kartika she fasted and worshipped. After that she kept this vrat regularly every year, and in time she was blessed with seven sons.
