Adhyaya 1

The sacrifice of giving everything

Le sacrifice où l’on donne tout

Vishvajit means “conqueror of all”, and in this sacrifice the king gave away all that he had. Kalidasa tells of King Raghu, who held the Vishvajit and emptied his treasury in gifts until he ate from clay bowls. Just then a young scholar, Kautsa, came to ask for fourteen crore gold coins to give his teacher as guru-dakshina. Seeing the king’s clay bowls, Kautsa turned to leave, but Raghu would not let a seeker go away empty-handed. He made ready to ride against Kubera himself, and that night Kubera rained gold into his treasury. Raghu offered it all to Kautsa, who would take only what he needed; neither would keep the rest, and it was given to the people. The rite is remembered for its teaching: true victory is in giving.
