El significado del vrat de Janmashtami
The significance of the Janmashtami vrat
On this day many people keep the vrat and sing bhajans and kirtans. Lord Krishna is worshipped in due form, and the story of his birth is heard. People decorate their homes, and Krishna’s temples take on a special radiance; in many places his lilas are acted out. Because Lord Krishna was born at midnight, it is at night that the child Krishna is bathed and offered new clothes. There is also the custom of rocking Bala Gopala in a cradle on this day.

Indra’s question and the prophecy to Kansa
Indra said: “O son of Brahma, best of sages, knower of all the shastras, O divine one, tell me the best of vrats, the vrat by which human beings gain liberation and benefit, and by which, O Brahmana, beings gain both enjoyment and moksha.” Hearing Indra, Narada said: “At the end of the Treta Yuga and the beginning of the Dvapara, there was a most sinful daitya named Kansa, a doer of shameful deeds. That wicked, base, evil-living Kansa had a beautiful sister named Devaki. The eighth son born from Devaki’s womb would kill Kansa.”
Hearing Narada, Indra said: “O great-minded one! Tell me the story of that evil Kansa in full. Is it possible that the eighth son born of Devaki will kill his own uncle Kansa?” Hearing Indra’s doubtful words, Narada said: “O Indra, son of Aditi! Once that wicked Kansa asked an astrologer, ‘Best of Brahmanas, knower of the stars! How, and by whom, will my death come?’ The astrologer said, ‘O Kansa, best of the danavas! Devaki, the eloquent wife of Vasudeva, who is also your sister — the eighth son born of her womb, who will defeat even his enemies and be famed in this world as Krishna, will one day kill you at the time of sunrise.’”
Hearing the astrologer, Kansa said, “O knower of the divine, foremost of the wise, now tell me in which month and on which day Devaki’s eighth son will kill me.” The astrologer said, “O king! On a tithi of the bright fortnight of Magha you will fight Shri Krishna, full of the sixteen kalas. In that battle he will kill you. So, O king, guard yourself with care.” Having told this, Narada said to Indra, “At the very time the astrologer named, Kansa’s death at Krishna’s hands will surely come.” Then Indra said, “O sage! Tell me the story of that evil Kansa, and how Krishna will be born, and how Kansa will die at Krishna’s hands.”

Devaki y Yashoda en el estanque
Devaki and Yashoda at the pond
No te lamentes.
Hearing Indra, Narada began again: “That evil Kansa said to one of his gatekeepers, ‘Guard this sister of mine, dear to me as life, in every way.’ The gatekeeper said, ‘So it shall be.’ After Kansa left, his younger sister, grieving, took a pitcher and went to the pond as if to fetch water. Sitting beneath a dense tree on the bank, Devaki began to weep. Just then a beautiful woman named Yashoda came and said to her in loving words, ‘O dear one! Why are you lamenting like this? Tell me why you weep.’ Then grieving Devaki said to Yashoda, ‘O sister! My elder brother Kansa is given to base deeds and evil ways. That wicked brother has killed many of my sons. Now my eighth son is in my womb, and he will kill this one too. There is no doubt of it, for my elder brother fears that his death will surely come from my eighth son.’”
Hearing Devaki, Yashoda said, “O sister! Do not lament. I too am with child. If I have a daughter, take her in exchange for your son. In this way your son will not be killed by Kansa.”
Then Kansa asked his gatekeeper, “Where is Devaki? I do not see her now.” The gatekeeper said humbly, “O king! Your sister has gone to the pond for water.” At this Kansa grew angry and told the gatekeeper to go to the very place she had gone. The gatekeeper caught sight of Devaki by the pond and asked, “Why have you come here?” Devaki said, “There was no water in my house, and I came to the pond to fetch it.” Then Devaki went back to her house.
Adhyaya 4
El nacimiento a medianoche
The birth at midnight
Ella dijo a Kansa: «¡Oh malvado!
Kansa again told the gatekeeper, “Guard my sister fully in this house.” Kansa was now so afraid that he had great locks put on the doors inside the house, and set daityas and rakshasas to stand guard outside. Kansa tried every way to save his life. Then, with the Sun in Leo, the rain-bearing clouds took hold of the sky. It was the deep midnight of the eighth of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada. The Moon was in Taurus, in Rohini nakshatra, on a Wednesday, joined with Saubhagya yoga; and when, with the Moon rising at midnight, one ghati has passed after midnight, the fruit spoken of in Shruti, Smriti and the Puranas is surely gained.
Telling this, Narada said to Indra: “In such an auspicious moment, called Vijaya, Shri Krishna was born, and by Shri Krishna’s power the doors of the prison opened of themselves that very instant. The rakshasa guards at the gate all fell senseless. At that instant Devaki said to her husband Vasudeva, ‘My lord! Wake from sleep and take this eighth son of mine to Gokula; there give him to Yashoda, the wife of Nanda the cowherd.’ The Yamuna was then in full flood, but when Vasudeva stepped in to cross the Yamuna with the child Krishna in a winnowing basket, the moment the child’s feet touched her, the Yamuna returned to her former calm. Somehow Vasudeva reached Gokula, went into Nanda’s house, gave them his son at once and took their daughter in exchange. At once he came back from there and reached Kansa’s prison.”
In the morning, when all the rakshasa guards woke from sleep, Kansa asked the gatekeeper, “What has now been born of Devaki’s womb? Find out and tell me.” Obeying the king, the gatekeepers went into the prison and saw a girl in Devaki’s lap. They told Kansa, but Kansa began to fear that girl. So he went to the prison himself, snatched the girl from Devaki’s lap and dashed her on a rock — but by the maya of Vishnu the girl rose towards the sky, and in the heavens she turned into lightning.
She said to Kansa, “O wicked one! The one who will kill you has already been born in Nanda’s house in Gokula, and your death at his hands is certain. My name is Vaishnavi; I am born of the maya of Lord Vishnu, the maker of the world.” Saying this, she went away to heaven. Hearing that voice from the sky, Kansa flew into a rage. He sent the rakshasi Putana to Nanda’s house to kill Krishna, but when she began to suckle Krishna, Krishna drew out her life through her breast, and the rakshasi died crying “Krishna, Krishna.”
The parijata flowers and Yashoda’s vow
¿De dónde has venido y por qué has venido?’”
When Kansa heard of Putana’s death, he sent, one after another, the daitya Keshi in the form of a horse and then the daitya Arishta in the form of a bull to kill Krishna, but both died at Krishna’s hands. Then Kansa sent a daitya called Kalyakhya in the form of a crow, but he too was killed by Krishna. Shaken by the deaths of his mighty rakshasas, Kansa grew terribly afraid. He ordered his gatekeepers, “Bring Nanda before me at once.” When the gatekeepers brought Nanda, Kansa said to him, “If you want to save your life, bring me parijata flowers. If you cannot, your death is certain.”
Hearing Kansa, Nanda said, “So it shall be,” and went home. At home he told the whole story to his wife Yashoda, and Shri Krishna was listening too. One day Shri Krishna was playing ball with his friends on the bank of the Yamuna, and suddenly he himself threw the ball into the Yamuna. His real purpose in throwing the ball into the river was to bring back the parijata flowers somehow. So he climbed a kadamba tree and leapt into the Yamuna.
A cowherd named Shridhara told Yashoda that Krishna had jumped into the Yamuna. Hearing this, Yashoda came running to the bank of the Yamuna and prayed to the river: “O Yamuna! If I see my child again, I will surely keep the vrat of the Ashtami of Bhadrapada joined with Rohini — for compassion, giving, good people, birth in a Brahmana family, the Ashtami joined with Rohini, Ganga water, Ekadashi, shraddha at Gaya and the Rohini vrat are all hard to come by.”
Whatever fruit comes from thousands of ashvamedha sacrifices, thousands of rajasuya sacrifices, from giving, pilgrimage and vrats — all of it is gained by keeping the Krishnashtami vrat. This is what the sage Narada told Indra. Indra said, “O Narada, best of sages! After leaping into the Yamuna, what did the child Krishna do in the underworld? Tell me this whole story too.” Narada said, “O Indra! In the underworld the wife of the serpent king said to the child, ‘What are you doing here? Where have you come from, and why have you come?’”
Adhyaya 6
Krishna y Kaliya
Krishna and Kaliya
¿Has estado apostando y has perdido toda tu riqueza?
No te reconocí, Krishna. Devuélveme a mi esposo.”
The serpent’s wife said, “O Krishna! Have you been gambling and lost all your wealth? If so, take bracelets, a crown and a necklace of gems and go home, for my lord is sleeping now. If he wakes, he will devour you.” Hearing her, Krishna said, “O lady! I will tell you why I have come. Know that I have lost the head of the serpent Kaliya to Kansa at dice, and I have come here to take it.” Hearing the child Krishna say this, the serpent’s wife grew furious, and waking her sleeping husband she said, “My lord! An enemy has come to your house. Kill him.”
Hearing his queen, the serpent Kaliya woke from sleep and began to fight the child Krishna. In the fight Krishna swooned, and to drive the swoon away he called Garuda to mind. As soon as he remembered him, Garuda came. Now Shri Krishna, mounted on Garuda, fought Kaliya and defeated him in battle.
Now Kaliya knew well that the one he was fighting was Shri Krishna himself, an avatara of Lord Vishnu. So he bowed at Krishna’s feet with his whole body to the ground, set many flowers born of the parijata in a crown and offered them to Krishna. As Krishna made to leave, Kaliya’s wife said, “O lord! I did not know you, Krishna. O Janardana, protect me, who am without mantra, without rite, without devotion. O Lord! Give me back my husband.” Then Shri Krishna said, “O serpent-wife! I will take your husband before Kansa, the mightiest of the daityas, and leave him there; otherwise, go back to your home.” Then Shri Krishna came up above the Yamuna, dancing on Kaliya’s hood.
Then the three worlds shook with Kaliya’s hissing. Now Krishna set out for Kansa’s city of Mathura. There, seeing the lotus flowers, the serpent Kaliya too went into the pool in the middle of the Yamuna.
Adhyaya 7
Chanura, Keshi y el fin de Kansa
Chanura, Keshi and the end of Kansa
Entonces Indra preguntó a Narada: “¡Oh gran sabio!
Kansa was astonished, and Krishna came back to Gokula with a happy heart. When he came back to Gokula, his mother Yashoda held many kinds of celebrations. Now Indra asked Narada, “O great sage! The beings of the world rejoiced greatly at the child Shri Krishna’s coming. What deeds did Shri Krishna do? Be gracious and tell me all of them.” Narada said to Indra, “The heart-stealing city of Mathura lies on the southern side of the Yamuna. There lived Kansa’s mighty brother Chanura. A wrestling match was announced between Shri Krishna and that Chanura. O Indra!”
“The wrestling match of Krishna and Chanura was most wondrous. Beside Chanura, Krishna was but a child. Amid the sound of drums, conches and mridangas, Kansa and Keshi watched this fight in the midst of the assembly of Mathura. Shri Krishna locked his legs round Chanura’s neck and killed him. After Chanura’s death he wrestled with Keshi, and in the end Keshi too was killed by Krishna in the fight. After Keshi’s death, everyone watching the match began to cry ‘Victory to Shri Krishna!’ The killing of Chanura and Keshi by the child Krishna broke Kansa’s heart. So he called his soldiers and ordered them: ‘Arm yourselves with every weapon and fight Krishna.’”
“O Indra! At that very moment Shri Krishna called to mind Garuda, Balarama and the Sudarshana chakra, and so Baladeva came, mounted on Garuda, bringing the Sudarshana chakra. Seeing him come, the child Krishna took the Sudarshana chakra from him and, seated himself on Garuda’s back, slew who knows how many rakshasas and daityas, and maimed the bodies of many more. In this battle Shri Krishna and Baladeva slew countless daityas. On the seventh of the bright fortnight of Magha, Balarama with his weapon, the plough, and Krishna with the Sudarshana chakra destroyed the great host of daityas.”
When at last only the evil Kansa was left, Krishna said, “O wicked, unrighteous, evil-doer! Now on this great field of battle I will fight you, kill you and set this world at liberty from you.” Saying this, Shri Krishna seized him by the hair, whirled Kansa round and dashed him to the ground, and he died. At Kansa’s death the gods blew conches and rained down flowers. The crowd gathered there cried “Victory to Shri Krishna!” At Kansa’s death, Nanda, Devaki, Vasudeva, Yashoda and all the beings of this world kept a festival of joy.
