Adhyaya 2
The wedding Ganesha was not invited to
Once, preparations were under way for the marriage of Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi. All the gods were invited, but no invitation was sent to Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. All the gods came to the wedding with their wives, but Ganesha was not there. Seeing this, the gods asked Lord Vishnu why. He said, “I have sent the invitation to Lord Shiva and Parvati; if Ganesha wishes to come with his parents, he may. But he needs a sava man of mung, a sava man of rice, a sava man of ghee and a sava man of laddus to eat in a day. It is just as well if he does not come — it does not look good to go to someone else’s house and eat and drink so much.”
Then one of the gods said, “If Ganesha comes, he could be given the care of the house. He could be told: ‘If you go slowly on your mouse, the wedding procession will go on ahead and you will be left behind; so look after the house.’” As planned, Ganesha came at Vishnu’s invitation and was given the care of the house. The procession left the house, and Ganesha sat at the door. Seeing this, Narada asked him why, and he said that Lord Vishnu had insulted him. Then Narada gave Ganesha a suggestion.
Adhyaya 3
Los carros atascados y el herrero
The stuck chariots and the blacksmith
Following the suggestion, Ganapati sent his army of mice ahead of the procession, and they dug up the whole road. As a result, the wheels of the gods’ chariots stuck fast in the road, and the procession could go no further. No one could see what to do. Then Narada advised that Ganesha be called, so that the gods’ obstacles would be removed. At Lord Shiva’s command, Nandi brought Gajanana. The gods worshipped Ganesha, and then the chariot wheels came out of the pits — but many of the wheels had broken.
Close by, a blacksmith was at work, and he was called. Before beginning his work he remembered Ganesha in his heart, and in the twinkling of an eye he mended all the chariot wheels. He said to the gods, “It seems that none of you worshipped Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, before beginning this auspicious work; that is why this trouble came. Meditate on Ganesha and go on, and all your work will be done.” The gods cried “Victory to Ganesha!” and the procession reached its destination safely. The marriage of Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi was completed.
