Bhimasena pregunta a Vyasa
Bhimasena asks Vyasa
Bhimasena interroge Vyasa
Bhimasena said to Vyasa: “O grandsire! My brother Yudhishthira, mother Kunti, Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva all tell me to keep the Ekadashi vrat. But, great one, I tell them: brother, I can worship the Lord and give in charity, but I cannot go without food.”
At this Vyasa said, “O Bhimasena! If you hold hell to be bad and heaven good, do not eat grain on the two Ekadashis of every month.” Bhima said, “O grandsire! I have told you already that I cannot bear hunger. If there were only one vrat in the whole year, I could keep that, for in my belly is a fire named Vrika, and I cannot stay without eating. Food keeps it quiet; so to go even one mealtime without food is hard for me, let alone a whole fast.”
“So tell me a vrat that need be kept only once a year, and by which I may reach heaven.” Shri Vyasa said, “O son! The great rishis made many shastras by which heaven may be reached with little effort and without wealth. In the same way, in the shastras the vrat of the Ekadashi of both fortnights is kept for liberation.”
Hearing Vyasa’s words, Bhimasena grew afraid at the very name of hell and, trembling, said, “What shall I do now? I cannot keep two vrats a month; but I can surely try to keep one vrat a year. So if one day’s vrat in the year can bring my liberation, tell me of such a vrat.”

Nirjala Ekadashi
Nirjala Ekadashi
Nirjala Ekadashi
Hearing this, Vyasa said, “The Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha that comes between the sankranti of Taurus and of Gemini is called Nirjala. Keep the vrat of that Ekadashi. In this vrat, water is forbidden except for bathing and achamana. In achamana there should be no more than six mashas of water, or it becomes like drinking liquor. One should not eat on this day, for eating destroys the vrat.”
“If one takes no water from sunrise on Ekadashi until sunrise on Dvadashi, one receives the fruit of the vrat of all the Ekadashis. On Dvadashi, rise before sunrise, bathe, and give gifts to Brahmanas. After that, feed a hungry and worthy Brahmana, and then eat yourself. Its fruit equals that of all the Ekadashis of a whole year.” Vyasa said, “O Bhimasena! The Lord himself told me this. The merit of this Ekadashi is greater than all the tirthas and all gifts. By staying without water for just one day, a person is released from wrongdoing.”
“Those who keep the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat are not surrounded by Yama’s messengers at the time of death; instead the Lord’s attendants seat them in the Pushpaka chariot and take them to heaven. So the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat is the best in the world, and it should be kept with care. On that day one should recite the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’ and give a cow.”
So, as Vyasa bade him, Bhimasena kept this vrat. That is why this Ekadashi is also called Bhimaseni or Pandava Ekadashi. Before keeping the Nirjala vrat, pray to the Lord: “O Lord! Today I keep the Nirjala vrat; I will eat on the next day. I will keep this vrat with faith; so by your grace may all my wrongs be destroyed.” On this day one should give a pot filled with water, covered with a cloth, together with gold.
Adhyaya 4
El fruto del vrat
The fruit of the vrat
Those who keep this vrat receive the fruit of giving crores of palas of gold, and the fruit of those who perform yajnas on this day cannot even be described. By the vrat of this Ekadashi one reaches Vishnu’s world. Those who eat grain on this day are like chandalas, and in the end they go to hell. Whoever has kept the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat — even one who has killed a Brahmana, drunk liquor, stolen, or borne hatred towards the guru — goes to heaven by the power of this vrat.
“O son of Kunti! The man or woman who keeps this vrat with faith should do these things: first worship the Lord, then give a cow, give sweets and dakshina to Brahmanas, and surely give a kalasha filled with water. On Nirjala one should also give grain, clothes, footwear and the like. Those who read or hear this katha with devotion surely reach heaven.”
Keeping the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, in due form not only gives the fruit of all the Ekadashi vrats of the year but opens the door to Vishnu’s world. All of a person’s wrong deeds lose their fruit.
