Adhyaya 1

El caballo que vagó durante un año

The horse that wandered for a year

The Ashvamedha was the greatest of the royal sacrifices, kept by a king to show that his rule was just and accepted far and wide. A consecrated horse was set loose to wander for a year, followed by the king’s warriors. Wherever it went, the rulers of those lands either welcomed it, accepting the king’s overlordship, or stopped it and fought. When the horse returned, a great sacrifice lasting days was held, with gifts to priests and people. The Ramayana tells of Rama’s Ashvamedha, during which his own sons Lava and Kusha, not yet known to him, captured the horse; the Mahabharata tells of Yudhishthira’s after the war, offered to cleanse the sorrow of the battle. The rite belonged to kings and to an age gone by; its memory lives in the epics.
