The Sai vrat
Le vrat de Sai
Anyone may keep the Sai vrat. Sai Baba recognised no distinction of caste or any other kind; his word was, ‘Sabka malik ek hai’ — the Lord of all is one. The vrat may be begun on any Thursday, taking Sai Baba’s name. Morning or evening, a picture or image of Sai Baba is worshipped. Spread a yellow cloth on a seat and set Sai Baba’s picture on it. Use yellow flowers or a garland for the worship. Light incense and a lamp and read the katha of the Sai vrat. After the worship, share the prasada; fruit or sweets may be given as prasada.
When nine vrats to Sai Baba of Shirdi are complete, on the day of the last vrat one should feed five poor people and give in charity. In this way the vrat should be closed.
Kokila Bahan and the old maharaja
Kokila Bahan et le vieux maharaja
Kokila Bahan and her husband Maheshbhai lived in a city. There was love between them, but Maheshbhai had a quarrelsome nature. Kokila Bahan, on the other hand, was a very religious woman with faith in God. Little by little her husband’s trade and livelihood came to a standstill, and nothing was being earned. Maheshbhai now stayed at home all day and took to wrong ways, and his temper grew even more irritable than before.
One afternoon an old maharaja came and stood at the door. His face shone wonderfully, and he asked for dal and rice. Kokila Bahan gave him dal and rice and greeted the old baba with folded hands. The old man said, ‘May Sai keep you happy.’ Kokila Bahan said, ‘Maharaja, happiness is not in my fate,’ and told him of her unhappy life. The maharaja told her of the vrat of Shri Sai: on nine Thursdays take only fruit, or eat once; if you can, child, go to the Sai temple; worship Sai Baba at home for nine Thursdays; keep the Sai vrat and close it in due form with an udyapana; feed the hungry — and Sai Baba will fulfil all your wishes. Unbroken faith in Sai Baba is essential.
The nine Thursdays bear fruit
Les neuf jeudis portent leurs fruits
Kokila Bahan took up the Thursday vrat. On the ninth Thursday she fed the poor. Quarrels left her home, and great happiness and peace came into the house. Maheshbhai’s very nature changed. His livelihood started again, and in a short time happiness and prosperity grew. Husband and wife began to live a happy life. One day Kokila Bahan’s brother-in-law and his wife came from Surat. In the course of talk they said that their children did not study and had failed their examinations. Kokila Bahan told them the greatness of the nine Thursdays and said that by devotion to Sai Baba the children would be able to study well — but for this, faith in Sai Baba was needed. ‘Sai helps everyone.’ Her sister-in-law asked her to explain the method of the vrat, and Kokila Bahan told her everything the old maharaja had told her.
In a few days a letter came from her sister-in-law in Surat: her children had begun keeping the Sai vrat and were studying very well. She had kept the vrat too. She wrote that her friend’s daughter’s marriage had been arranged into a very good family by keeping the Sai vrat, and that a neighbour’s box of jewellery that had gone missing had now been found. Many such wonders had happened. Kokila Bahan understood that Sai Baba’s glory is boundless.
