Adhyaya 2
La brahmani y el príncipe herido
The Brahmani and the wounded prince
According to the Puranich katha, a Brahmani lived in a town. Her husband had died, and she now had no one to support her, so as soon as morning came she would set out with her son to beg. In this way she fed herself and her son.
One day, as the Brahmani was returning home, she found a boy lying wounded and groaning. Out of pity she brought him home. The boy was the prince of Vidarbha. Enemy soldiers had attacked his kingdom, taken his father captive and seized control of the kingdom, and so he was wandering about, a fugitive. The prince began to live in the Brahmani’s house with her son.
One day a gandharva maiden named Anshumati saw the prince and was taken with him. The next day Anshumati brought her mother and father to meet the prince, and they too liked him. Some days later Lord Shankara commanded Anshumati’s parents in a dream that the prince and Anshumati should be married. So it was done.
Along with keeping the Pradosha vrat, the Brahmani would worship Lord Shankara. By the power of the Pradosha vrat and with the help of the gandharva king’s army, the prince drove the enemies out of Vidarbha and lived happily again with his father. The prince made the Brahmani’s son his chief minister. It is believed that just as the Brahmani’s days turned by the power of the Pradosha vrat, so Lord Shankara turns the days of his devotees.
