Putrakameshti is the ishti, the offering, made by one who longs for a son. Its best-known telling is in the Ramayana. King Dasharatha of Ayodhya had no heir. On the advice of his counsellors he first performed the Ashvamedha, and then called the sage Rishyashringa to lead the Putrakameshti. As the offerings were poured, a radiant being rose from the fire bearing a golden vessel of payasa, sweet rice cooked in milk, made by the gods. Dasharatha gave it to his three queens: half to Kausalya, a quarter to Sumitra (in two portions) and the rest to Kaikeyi. In time Kausalya bore Rama, Kaikeyi bore Bharata, and Sumitra bore Lakshmana and Shatrughna. The rite was a great shrauta sacrifice led by learned priests. For a household today, the Santana Gopala Havan (in this section) is the prayer kept for a child.
