In the Hindu tradition the Monday vrat is held to be most holy and fruitful. It is usually begun on the first Monday of the bright fortnight of Shravana, Chaitra, Vaishakha, Kartika or Magha. It is believed that if the vrat is kept with faith and discipline for sixteen Mondays in a row, Lord Shiva fulfils every wish of the devotee.
By religious belief, the Monday vrat especially removes obstacles to marriage. The month of Savan is held the most auspicious for beginning it; to begin it in Margashirsha (Agahan) is also auspicious, and many scholars advise beginning it in Chaitra or Agahan as well.
The vrat is held to be especially beneficial for unmarried girls: it is believed that keeping the Savan Mondays brings a girl an excellent and worthy husband.
The month of Savan has a special place in the Hindu tradition. Worship of Shiva in this month is said to fulfil every wish of the devotee; the Monday vrat bears fruit quickly in this month; worship of Shiva now removes difficulties in marriage and ends every kind of sorrow. Worship of Shiva destroys all our wrongs, and after death brings moksha.
In a certain city there lived a sahukar. His house lacked nothing in wealth, but he had no child, and this made him very sad. Wishing for a son, he kept Lord Shiva’s vrat every Monday and worshipped Shiva and Parvati in the Shiva temple with complete devotion. Seeing his devotion, Mother Parvati was pleased and asked Lord Shiva to fulfil the sahukar’s wish. Hearing her, Lord Shiva said, “O Parvati, in this world every being receives the fruit of its own deeds, and must bear whatever is in its fate.” But Parvati wished to keep the sahukar’s faith alive by granting his wish. At Mother Parvati’s request Shiva gave the sahukar the boon, but he also said that the child would be short-lived and would live only to sixteen.
The sahukar had heard this conversation between Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva. He went on worshipping Shiva as before. Some time later a son was born to him. When the boy was eleven, he was sent to Kashi to study. The sahukar called the boy’s maternal uncle, gave him a great deal of money and said, “Take this child to Kashi to gain learning, and hold yajnas on the way. Wherever you hold a yajna, feed the Brahmanas and give them dakshina before you go on.”
Uncle and nephew went on in this way, holding yajnas and giving dakshina to the Brahmanas, on the road to Kashi. On the way was a city whose king’s daughter was about to be married. But the prince to whom she was promised was blind in one eye, and the king did not know this. Taking advantage of the moment, the prince made the sahukar’s son stand in as bridegroom in his place. The sahukar’s son, however, was honest. He seized the chance and wrote on the princess’s dupatta: “You have been married to me, but the prince with whom you will be sent away has only one eye. I am going to Kashi to study.”
When the princess read the words written on her chunni, she told her parents. The king did not send his daughter away; the wedding party left without her. Meanwhile the sahukar’s son and his uncle reached Kashi and held a yajna there. On the day the boy reached the end of his years, when he was sixteen, a yajna was being held. The boy told his uncle, “I am not feeling well.” His uncle said, “Go inside and sleep.” As Shiva’s boon had foretold, in a few moments the child’s life left him.
Seeing his nephew dead, the uncle began to wail. By chance, Shiva and Mother Parvati were passing by just then. Parvati said to the Lord, “Lord of my life, I cannot bear his cries. You must take away this man’s grief.” When Shiva came to the dead boy he said, “This is the son of that same sahukar to whom I gave the boon at twelve years. Now his years are over.” But Mother Parvati said, “O Mahadeva, be gracious and give this child more years, or his mother and father will die too.” At this request, Lord Shiva gave the boy the boon of life, and by Shiva’s grace the child came back to life.
His studies finished, the boy was returning home with his uncle when they came to the very city where he had been married to the princess. There too he held a yajna. The king of that city recognised him at once. When the yajna was over, the king brought the merchant’s son and his uncle to the palace and sent them off with the princess, giving them much wealth and many clothes.
As soon as they reached their city, the boy’s uncle sent a messenger home with news of their coming. The merchant was overjoyed to hear that his son was coming back alive. He and his wife had shut themselves in a room, waiting for their son without food or water. They had vowed that if they heard of their son’s death, both would give up their lives. The merchant came with his wife to the city gate. Hearing that his son was alive and married, his joy knew no bounds.
That same night Lord Shiva came to the merchant in a dream and said, “O shreshthi! Pleased that you kept the Monday vrat and heard its katha, I have given your son a long life.” Hearing this, the merchant was full of joy.
