There was an old woman who had only one son. After her son’s marriage the old woman made her daughter-in-law do all the work of the house but did not feed her properly. The boy saw all this but could say nothing to his mother. After much thought, one day the boy said to his mother, ‘Mother, I am going abroad.’ The mother gave her son leave to go. Then he went to his wife and said, ‘I am going abroad; give me something to remember you by.’ The wife said, ‘I have nothing worth giving as a keepsake.’ Saying this, she fell weeping at her husband’s feet, and her hands, smeared with cow dung, left their print on his shoes.
After the son left, the mother-in-law’s cruelty grew worse. One day the daughter-in-law, in sorrow, went to the temple, where many women were worshipping. She asked the women about the vrat, and they said, ‘We are keeping the vrat of Santoshi Mata. It destroys every kind of suffering.’ The women told her: ‘On Friday, after bathing, take pure water in a lota and gur and chickpeas as prasada, and worship the Mother with a true heart. Never eat anything sour, even by mistake, nor give it to anyone. Eat only once in the day.’ Having heard the rule of the vrat, she began to keep it every Friday with discipline. By the Mother’s grace, after some days a letter came from her husband, and some days later money came too. Gladly she kept the vrat again and, going to the temple, told the other women, ‘By Santoshi Ma’s grace a letter and money have come from my husband.’ All the other women too began to keep the vrat with faith. The daughter-in-law said, ‘O Mother! When my husband comes home, I will keep the udyapana of your vrat.’

Then one night Santoshi Ma came to her husband in a dream and said, ‘Why do you not go home?’ He said, ‘The seth’s goods are not all sold yet, and the money has not come in yet.’ He told the seth all about the dream and asked leave to go home, but the seth refused. By the Mother’s grace many traders came and bought gold, silver and other goods, and the debtors too returned what they owed; now the sahukar gave him leave to go home. Coming home, the son gave his mother and his wife a great deal of money. His wife said, ‘I must keep the udyapana of Santoshi Mata’s vrat.’ She invited everyone and made all the preparations for the udyapana. A woman of the neighbourhood had grown jealous, seeing her happy. She taught her children: ‘At the meal, be sure to ask for something sour.’
During the udyapana, as they ate, the children clamoured for something sour, and the daughter-in-law quieted them by giving them money. The children bought tamarind and sour things at the shop with that money and ate them. At this the Mother was angered with the daughter-in-law. The king’s messengers began to take her husband away. Then someone told her that at the udyapana the children had eaten tamarind bought with the money, so the daughter-in-law resolved to keep the udyapana of the vrat again. After making the resolve she left the temple and saw her husband coming along the road. Her husband said, ‘The king had asked for the tax on all the wealth I have earned.’ On the next Friday she kept the udyapana of the vrat again, in due form. With this Santoshi Ma was pleased. Nine months later a son was born, lovely as the moon. Now mother-in-law, daughter-in-law and son lived in joy by the Mother’s grace.
