ഭാരതത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട ഉത്സവങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് ദുർഗാഷ്ടമി. അഷ്ടമീവ്രതം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ച് ഈ ദിവസം നവരാത്രിവ്രതം സമാപിപ്പിക്കുന്ന അനേകരുണ്ട്. ഈ ദിവസം ഉപവസിക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ ദുർഗാദേവിയുടെ സ്തുതി പാടുകയും നിങ്ങൾക്കും കുടുംബത്തിനുമായി അവളുടെ അനുഗ്രഹം യാചിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യാം. ഭാരതത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവും വ്യാപകമായി ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ദേവിയാണ് ദുർഗാദേവി.

പൗരാണിക കഥയനുസരിച്ച്, മാസംതോറുമുള്ള ദുർഗാഷ്ടമിയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഇങ്ങനെ പറയുന്നു: ദുർഗമൻ എന്ന ക്രൂരനായ ഒരു അസുരൻ തന്റെ ക്രൂരതയാൽ മൂന്നു ലോകങ്ങളെയും പീഡിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. അവന്റെ ഭീകരത കാരണം എല്ലാ ദേവന്മാരും സ്വർഗം വിട്ട് കൈലാസത്തിലേക്കു പോയി. ഒരു ദേവനും തന്നെ വധിക്കാനാവില്ല എന്ന വരം ദുർഗമൻ എന്ന അസുരനുണ്ടായിരുന്നു; ഈ വിഷമത്തിൽനിന്ന് ഒരു വഴി കണ്ടെത്താൻ എല്ലാ ദേവന്മാരും ഭഗവാൻ ശിവനോടു യാചിച്ചു.
അപ്പോൾ ബ്രഹ്മാവും വിഷ്ണുവും ശിവനും തങ്ങളുടെ ശക്തികൾ ഒന്നിച്ചുചേർത്ത്, ശുക്ലപക്ഷ അഷ്ടമിയിൽ ദുർഗാദേവിയെ ആവിർഭവിപ്പിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് ദുർഗാമാതാവിന് ഏറ്റവും ശക്തമായ ആയുധങ്ങൾ നൽകി; ദുർഗമൻ എന്ന അസുരനെതിരെ യുദ്ധം നടന്നു. ആ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ മാതാവ് അസുരനെ വധിച്ചു; അന്നുമുതൽ ദുർഗാഷ്ടമി നിലവിൽവന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ദുർഗാഷ്ടമിയിൽ ആയുധപൂജ (ശസ്ത്രപൂജ) ചെയ്യുന്ന വിധിയും ഉള്ളത്.
According to the Puranich katha, it is told of the monthly Durga Ashtami that a cruel demon named Durgama had tormented the three worlds with his cruelty. Because of his terror all the gods left heaven and went to Kailasa. The demon Durgama held a boon that no god could slay him, and all the gods begged Lord Shiva to find a way out of this trouble.
Then Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva joined their powers together and, on the Ashtami of the bright fortnight, brought Goddess Durga into being. Mother Durga was then given the mightiest of weapons, and war was waged against the demon Durgama. In that war the Mother slew the demon, and from that time Durga Ashtami came to be. That is why on Durga Ashtami there is also the rule of worshipping weapons (shastra puja).
पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार मासिक दुर्गा अष्टमी के दिन के लिए मान्यता है कि दुर्गम नाम के क्रूर राक्षस ने अपनी क्रूरता से तीनों लोकों पर अत्याचार किया हुआ था। उसके आतंक के कारण सभी देवता स्वर्ग छोड़कर कैलाश चले गए थे। दुर्गम राक्षस को वरदान था कि कोई भी देवता उसका वध नहीं कर सकता, सभी देवता ने भगवान शिव से विनती कि वो इस परेशानी का हल निकालें।
इसके बाद ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और शिव ने अपनी शक्तियों को मिलाकर शुक्ल पक्ष की अष्टमी के दिन देवी दुर्गा को जन्म दिया। इसके बाद माता दुर्गा को सबसे शक्तिशाली हथियार दिया गया और राक्षस दुर्गम के साथ युद्ध छेड़ दिया गया। जिसमें माता ने राक्षस का वध कर दिया और इसके बाद से दुर्गा अष्टमी की उत्पत्ति हुई। इसलिए दुर्गा अष्टमी के दिन शस्त्र पूजा का भी विधान है।
Selon la katha des Purana, on raconte au sujet de la Durga Ashtami mensuelle qu’un démon cruel nommé Durgama tourmentait les trois mondes par sa cruauté. À cause de la terreur qu’il répandait, tous les dieux quittèrent le ciel et s’en allèrent au Kailasa. Le démon Durgama avait reçu la faveur qu’aucun dieu ne pourrait le tuer, et tous les dieux supplièrent le Seigneur Shiva de trouver une issue à ce malheur.
Alors Brahma, Vishnu et Shiva unirent leurs puissances et, le jour de l’Ashtami de la quinzaine claire, firent naître la Déesse Durga. On remit ensuite à Mère Durga les armes les plus puissantes, et la guerre fut engagée contre le démon Durgama. Dans cette guerre, la Mère tua le démon, et c’est depuis lors qu’existe Durga Ashtami. Voilà pourquoi, le jour de Durga Ashtami, la règle comprend aussi le culte des armes (shastra puja).
