The Rajasuya was the sacrifice by which a king was consecrated as samrat, a sovereign over other kings. Before it, the king’s brothers or generals went out in the four directions to win the allegiance of other rulers, who then came to the sacrifice bearing gifts. Its best-known telling is Yudhishthira’s in the Mahabharata: his brothers went out to the four quarters, Bhima overcame Jarasandha, and kings from all over Bharata came to Indraprastha. At the rite Krishna was honoured first among the guests, Shishupala raged against it and met his end, and Duryodhana, stung by the splendour of the hall, began the envy that led to the game of dice. A rite of kings, it is remembered today as a lesson in the weight of honour and pride.
राजसूय वह यज्ञ था जिससे राजा का सम्राट के रूप में, अन्य राजाओं के ऊपर, अभिषेक होता था। उससे पहले राजा के भाई या सेनापति चारों दिशाओं में जाकर अन्य राजाओं की निष्ठा प्राप्त करते, जो फिर उपहार लेकर यज्ञ में आते। इसका सबसे प्रसिद्ध वर्णन महाभारत में युधिष्ठिर का है: उनके भाई चारों दिशाओं में गए, भीम ने जरासन्ध को पराजित किया, और पूरे भारत के राजा इन्द्रप्रस्थ आए। यज्ञ में अतिथियों में सबसे पहले श्रीकृष्ण का पूजन हुआ, शिशुपाल इस पर क्रोधित हुआ और मारा गया, और सभा के वैभव से आहत दुर्योधन के मन में वह ईर्ष्या जागी जो द्यूत तक ले गई। राजाओं का यह यज्ञ आज सम्मान और अहंकार के भार की सीख के रूप में याद किया जाता है।
Le Rajasuya était le sacrifice par lequel un roi était consacré samrat, souverain au-dessus des autres rois. Auparavant, les frères ou les généraux du roi partaient vers les quatre directions gagner l’allégeance d’autres souverains, qui venaient ensuite au sacrifice avec des présents. Son récit le plus connu est celui de Yudhishthira dans le Mahabharata : ses frères partirent aux quatre horizons, Bhima vainquit Jarasandha, et des rois de tout le Bharata vinrent à Indraprastha. Au rite, Krishna fut honoré le premier parmi les hôtes, Shishupala s’en indigna et y trouva sa fin, et Duryodhana, blessé par la splendeur de la salle, conçut l’envie qui mena à la partie de dés. Rite des rois, on s’en souvient aujourd’hui comme d’une leçon sur le poids de l’honneur et de l’orgueil.
